Autumn hike to Leuchtenburg Castle
Leuchtenburg Castle – a timeless symbol above Lake Caldaro The ruins of Leuchtenburg, closely tied to the identity of Lake Caldaro, were built in 1250 by the Lords of Rottenburg. Although no longer within the municipal boundaries, the castle remains a true landmark of Kaltern and features on almost every postcard of the lake. Following a conflict in 1410, the castle passed into the hands of Duke Frederick IV of Tyrol and later served as the residence of Kaltern’s local judge. Abandoned in the 17th century, parts of the original ring wall and the main building (palas) with remnants of frescoes are still preserved today. A visit in autumn is especially rewarding, as the trail to the castle offers stunning views over the golden-hued landscape of South Tyrol’s south. Below you’ll find our recommended circular hike:
From Hotel SEELEITEN, up to Leuchtenburg Castle, and down to SEELEITEN’s Lake House – a perfect way to explore the beauty and history of the region.
Hiking Tip at Lake Caldaro
Hike from Hotel SEELEITEN to Leuchtenburg – Rosszähne – Lake Park – Lake House
- Distance: approx. 15 km
- Duration: about 4.5 hours
- Difficulty: moderate
- Elevation gain: approx. 430 meters
- Tip: Order a packed lunch at the hotel and don’t forget your swimwear!
This scenic hike starts right at Hotel SEELEITEN and follows the northern shore of Lake Caldaro to the striking Leuchtenburg Castle, which sits proudly above the lake. Take in the breathtaking view of the deep blue water shimmering in the sunlight and the gently rolling hills surrounding the lake. The trail then continues to the Rosszähne, a dramatic rock formation on the Mitterberg ridge that resembles a row of horse’s teeth. Small caves in the rocks emit warm air, earning them the local name "Warmlöcher" (“warm holes”). Their counterpart, the "Kaltlöcher" (“cold holes”), can be found in the northwest of Kaltern, where cool air flows even during the heat of summer.
From the Rosszähne, the route leads back to the eastern shore of Lake Caldaro. Head south along the trail and pass by the Lake Park, Hotel SEELEITEN’s natural and serene lakeside access point. After about 3 hours of hiking, a refreshing dip in the lake feels like pure luxury!
After your stop at the Lake Park, the trail continues around the lake to the western shore, where the final stop awaits: SEELEITEN’s Lake House. By now, you've earned that Aperol Spritz or a cold beer!
