Törggelen in Caldaro: as colourful as autumn

Autumn can do something few other seasons do quite so well: bring people together around a table.

Around Caldaro, it has always been this way. After the grape harvest, people would gather in farmhouse cellars and cosy Stuben to taste the „Nuin“, the young wine, and to törggelen! The table was filled with whatever the harvest had brought to the pantry: simple, honest, hearty food.

Even the name tells the story. Törggelen comes from the Torggl, the traditional wine press once used to process the grapes. From this combination of harvest, good food and conviviality grew an autumn tradition that is still very much alive around Caldaro today.

Törggelen – a tradition with many faces

Rustic in a „Buschenschank“, idyllic on a farm or a little more refined in a traditional inn or historic residence: today, there are many ways to experience Törggelen. What remains unchanged is the focus on autumn’s bounty and recipes handed down through generations.

The classics include barley or dumpling soup, Schlutzkrapfen, sausages with Sauerkraut, hearty meat dishes and, of course, Keschtn – roasted chestnuts. Sometimes traditionally prepared, sometimes given a more elegant twist. What really matters is the quality of the ingredients, honest cooking and, naturally, the right wine from Caldaro to go with it.

What does the landscape taste like?

For many, Törggelen and a walk through Caldaro’s vineyards and nearby forests simply belong together. In autumn, the vines glow yellow and gold, the air turns crisp and the trails gradually become quieter. And somewhere between Lake Caldaro, colourful woodland and rolling vineyards, the next Buschenschank is waiting to welcome you.

Fresh air certainly works up an appetite! And autumn might just be the loveliest time to sit down together and enjoy it.

So, where should you go? We won’t reveal that here. Because the best Törggelen recommendations around Caldaro are always the ones shared personally. Simply ask us at the SEELEITEN reception!

By the way: we celebrate Törggelen at SEELEITEN too, with a lunchtime get-together in autumn. Autumn sunshine, colourful views towards the lake and traditional flavours – sometimes the best experiences are right on your doorstep.
