Between hiking paths & winding curves
Some places feel like they were made for road cycling. Lake Caldaro and the South Tyrolean Wine Road are exactly that. A diverse landscape unfolds: orchards, vineyards, gentle hills and, above it all, the mountains. In between run perfectly paved roads, quiet back routes and cycle paths. Right in the middle of it all: SEELEITEN – a road bike hotel on Lake Caldaro for those who don’t just want to ride, but truly experience cycling.
Straight from the hotel onto your bike
Your ride begins right outside the hotel door. Clip in, warm up, and go. Either easy along Lake Caldaro or straight into the climbs. The starting point is as flexible as the tours themselves: flat, rolling or challenging. The region offers everything a road cyclist could wish for: flat stretches to ease in, gentle hills to find your rhythm, and long climbs with demanding elevation gain. If you want, you can tackle over 1,600 metres of elevation in one go – no real breaks and a steep finale. Prefer something more relaxed? Stay in the valley and collect kilometres along the Wine Road. And then there’s the famous “Ora” – the southern wind that often rises in the afternoon, adding intensity to every ride. Perfect for those who enjoy a challenge.
Road bike tours around Caldaro – from easy to demanding
From the lake, everything is possible: through the Überetsch area, towards Bolzano, or even all the way to Lake Garda.
Right by the lake, a flat loop of around 10–12 kilometres offers the perfect easy start. But that’s just the beginning. From here, routes branch out in every direction: up to the Mendel Pass, into the valleys, or across long distances through South Tyrol’s landscapes. What makes cycling here so special is its variety. From the relaxed Mitterberg loop (around 40 km and 300 metres of elevation) to the challenging Cembra Valley route (around 100 km and 1,300 metres of elevation). For a more leisurely ride, head towards Bolzano for a gelato tour. For structured training, combine Mendel Pass, Non Valley and Mezzocorona into a roughly 90 km ride with over 1,200 metres of elevation – including tailwind on the way back. And if you really want to push yourself, ride all the way to Lake Garda. The best part: many tours can be planned as loops – flexible, varied, and always new.
Between espresso and elevation gain
As sporty as the region is, it’s still South Tyrol. And that means: stopping is part of the experience. Along the routes you’ll find small bars, cafés and inns. An espresso, a slice of cake or a warm snack – exactly when you need it. Here, training and indulgence always go hand in hand. Perhaps that’s what makes road cycling in southern South Tyrol so special.
A long season, ideal conditions
The road cycling season around Lake Caldaro starts early – often as early as March – and can last until November. While it’s still winter elsewhere, roads here are already dry and perfectly rideable. Plenty of sunshine, reliable conditions and varied routes make this region an ideal destination. Especially in spring and autumn, South Tyrol shows its best side: calm, spacious and perfect for riding. A true alternative to classic training destinations like Mallorca – more personal, more relaxed and much closer.
SEELEITEN – a road bike hotel on Lake Caldaro
Back at SEELEITEN, one thing becomes clear: everything is designed with cyclists in mind. A spacious, secure bike garage, workshop, wash station and guided tours are standard. New additions include weekly guided rides with Helmuth and an additional MTB tour.
In the end, one feeling remains: just ride. Whether it’s a relaxed 40 km or an extended 100+, flat along the lake or climbing into the mountains – everyone finds their route here. And in the end, you always roll back to the lake. To breathe. And to take one last look at your ride stats.
